Beet Juice Lowers Blood Pressure in Older Adults.
In 2025, Anni Vanhatalo and a team from the University of Exeter studied 24 older adults (aged 60-75) in a 2-week trial. Participants drank nitrate-rich beetroot juice (140 mL/day, ~400 mg nitrate) or a placebo juice, and researchers measured blood pressure, oral bacteria, and blood vessel health using standard tests.
Beet juice reduced systolic blood pressure by 5-10 mmHg and improved blood vessel function by increasing nitric oxide production. It also boosted beneficial oral bacteria by 20-30%, aiding nitrate conversion, while harmful bacteria dropped, lowering heart disease risk. Placebo showed no changes.
Drink 140 mL of nitrate-rich beetroot juice daily to support heart health and lower blood pressure.
