ER Visits from Alcohol Are Skyrocketing.

A 2025 study in American Journal of Epidemiology found that 100% alcohol-attributable emergency department visits increased by 139% between 1993–94 and 2019–21—compared to just a 28% rise in overall ER visits. That means visits due solely to alcohol more than doubled, signaling a persistent and worsening public health issue.

The largest rise occurred among adults aged 50+, whose rates increased by 242%. Chronic alcohol misuse–related visits (like withdrawal, cirrhosis) surged by 158%, while acute issues slightly declined. This trend highlights a deeper cultural and medical concern: long-term, heavy alcohol use is escalating—especially in older populations.

If you’re part of the “just a drink or two” crowd—think again. This trend warns that even moderate habits can spiral. Monitor your intake, and seek support if needed.
